  • Criminal Voir Dires in Writing

    Effective immediately, where the accused is represented by Counsel and where Crown and Defence Counsel consent to waive the conduct of an oral hearing and cross-examination on affidavit evidence, voir dires or other pre-trial applications involving Criminal Code offences (excepting cases involving ss. 276/278 of the Criminal Code which contain specific hearing requirements) may be submitted to the Court with affidavit evidence and written argument (along with an electronic copy of video tape in the case of a s. 715.1 voir dire) to be considered by way of desk application.

    Effective immediately, where the accused is represented by Counsel and where Crown and Defence Counsel agree, Summary Conviction Appeals involving Criminal Code offences may be submitted to the Court with written argument to be considered by way of desk application.

  • Criminal Trial Triage Booking - June, July, August 2020

    May 22, 2020
    Commencing June, July and August, 2020, the Court will be hearing some short, judge-alone Criminal trials in-person in COVID-safe courtrooms. The Court will also be hearing some short, judge-alone Criminal trials via Webex video, where the accused is represented by Counsel and both Crown and Defence Counsel agree to proceed in this manner.

  • Desk Applications - Filing Signed Orders

    May 22, 2020
    Effective immediately, all desk applications that are signed by a Justice or a Master will first be filed by the Court and the Applicant will be required to pay any outstanding fees pertaining to the processing of the Order, prior to the Order being returned to the Applicant for service upon the Respondent(s).

    Pursuant to subsections 482(1) and (3) and section 482.1 of the Criminal Code, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta makes the annexed amendment to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta Criminal Procedure Rules.
