Requests for Bar Admission Ceremonies at the Court Of King’s Bench - 2024 (Amended)

May 1, 2024

The Court of King’s Bench will begin accepting requests for 2024 bar admissions on May 1, 2024. Due to limited resources, requests for bar admissions for June/July/August will not be processed until May 20, 2024.

Bar Admission Protocol

All requests for bar admissions must be made by submitting the Bar Admission Booking Request Form  online, which provides 5 available dates. Please note that the Law Society of Alberta requires the bar admission to be at least 30 days after the last day of a student’s articles, and 30 days after the submission of a complete Enrolment Application to the Law Society of Alberta

Bar admissions must be held either entirely in person or remotely via Webex. A maximum of two bar admissions will be heard per day in Edmonton and Calgary. All bar admissions will be heard at 1:15 PM.  No other times will be available.

Requests for a specific Justice

If a Student is requesting a specific Justice hear their bar admission, they are to indicate the name of the Justice as well as their relationship (family friend, relative, etc.) in the Additional Comments to Court Coordinator section of the form. Preferences for a specific Justice will be considered but may delay the response and securing a date. Dates will not be held while the Justices’ schedules are canvassed. These requests will be accommodated if possible and the judicial assignment is subject to change without notice.

Out of Province Transfer Calls - Under the Labour Mobility Act, the Law Society of Alberta issues licenses to lawyers transferring to Alberta from another Canadian jurisdiction and seeking membership in the Law Society. The Court of King's Bench of Alberta will therefore not schedule bar admissions for out-of-province transfers.
