Alberta Courts
Collectively described as Alberta’s judicial branch, three provincial courts serve the people of Alberta:
- Court of Appeal of Alberta
- Court of King’s Bench of Alberta
- Alberta Court of Justice
The Court of Appeal of Alberta is the highest court in the province and hears appeals from the Court of King's Bench, the Court of Justice, and administrative bodies and tribunals.
The Court of King's Bench of Alberta is the superior trial court in Alberta. The Court of King’s Bench hears trials in civil (including family) and criminal matters and appeals from the Court of Justice.
The Alberta Court of Justice hears the majority of criminal and regulatory offences in Alberta and hears civil cases up to $100,000, family, youth and traffic matters.
The three courts operate independently, but collaboratively. Each is committed to the fundamental principles of the justice system within Canada’s democratic system of government. The courts work administratively with the legislative and executive branches of government to ensure Alberta’s court system serves the needs of Albertans.
