About the Registry

The Court of Appeal of Alberta has locations in both Edmonton and Calgary.

The Registries are open 8:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m, Monday through Friday, with the exception of statutory holidays. The Registries are also closed on the days between Christmas Day and New Years Day, inclusive.

Appeals of decisions made in jurisdictions north of Red Deer are filed in Edmonton. Appeals of decisions made in jurisdictions in or south of Red Deer are filed in Calgary.

In Edmonton, the Court of Appeal is located at 1A Sir Winston Churchill Square immediately to the east of City Hall and to the north of the Art Gallery of Alberta. The Court of Appeal is located in the south tower of the building with the Registry on the main floor.

In Calgary, the Court of Appeal sits in two locations. All criminal matters are heard in Courtroom 1404 at the Calgary Courts Centre located at 601 5th Street SW. Most other matters are heard at 2600, 450-1st St. S.W. The Registry in Calgary is located at 2600, 450-1st St. S.W. All documents are filed at this location.

The Registry is responsible for:

• establishing and maintaining a court file for each appeal,
• establishing and maintaining Court Lists,
• receiving and filing all appeal materials, having control and custody of them and distributing them to the judges as required,
• attending in court as required and keeping a record of all proceedings before the Court,
• keeping proper accounts of money and property received or dispersed, and
• settling and signing judgments and orders in accordance with the Rules of Court.
