Court of King's Bench of Alberta
The Court of King's Bench is the Superior Trial Court for the Province, hearing trials in civil and criminal matters and appeals from decisions of the Court of Justice. The Chief Justice and other Justices of the Court are also judges of Surrogate Matters, which has jurisdiction over probate and administration of estate matters.
The Notice to the Public and Legal Profession issued by the Court of Appeal of Alberta, Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and Provincial Court of Alberta on April 27, 2022 lifts the restrictions on public access to Alberta’s courthouses, set out in the three Courts’ Notice to Public and Legal Profession of March 27, 2020. Those restrictions are lifted effective May 2, 2022.
For additional clarity, all other COVID-19 related measures at the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta remain in effect until further notice. This includes measures relating to remote hearings, off-site jury trials and jury selections, and the filing of materials at the Court of Queen’s Bench.
All matters currently scheduled to proceed remotely will continue to be heard remotely. There is no change to the Court’s policies and processes governing remote and in-person hearings going forward, until further notice. There is also no change to the current COVID-related policies and processes governing the filing of materials at the Court of Queen’s Bench.
